Late last week, Google let fly an announcement that scared more than a few people: their PC and Mac desktop app for Google Drive is going the. The move comes as a result of Google's desire to combine all of their existing cloud storage solutions into one cohesive app, something they've wanted to do since July. Google is changing the way you store files with them. Google's cloud storage platforms - Google Drive and Google Photos - are getting new desktop clients. Users will simply migrate to the new "Backup and Sync" application. This will upload everything once, then only upload changes (like rsync does), later on.
What is happening is that the old version of the Drive sync client called "Drive for Mac/PC" will no longer be supported. The most basic (but probably not very desirable) way to put all the stuff from one directory on your computer onto Google Drive, overwriting older versions, is to do this: rclone sync 'If you use Google Drive mostly through a web browser or Photos via Android, you probably won't notice any changes. The move to Drive for desktop will bring with it a unified, easier to use sync client.
